We are in the final stretch...

Language Arts: Reading-This week our story is the Time for Kids article which is very short. Therefore, we will not have a weekly homework packet. Instead, the students were grouped by tables and they discussed the questions together to formulate an answer for their question. We tried this last week, and I thought that it really helped those students who struggle to create a detailed answer.

Spelling-We will have a spelling test on Friday. I know that this week will be very busy for everyone, but please study spelling a little each night. The students are also expected to know the definitions of their high- lighted words. They will write detailed sentences with them on Friday.

Grammar- We discussed helping verbs and main verbs today. This will be the skill that is tested on Friday.

Writing- We found some time to squeeze in two chapters in our read aloud and time to write with our writing partner. So far, the stories are coming together nicely. They should be completed by the end of the week.

Homework:
***None-Just read!

************************************************************************************
Math: Today in math we reviewed inequalities, pan balances, fractions, order of operations, and fractions in preparation for our Unit 6 test on Wednesday. We will work on a practice test tomorrow which will look a lot like the actual test. This will be a great way to review for the test.

Homework:
***None

*************************************************************************************
Social Studies: On Friday of last week, we pretended we were divers and dove to the bottom of a sunken ship to recover artifacts and natural objects that were left by explorers. We discussed why each item may have been used. We also read and discussed lessons 4.3-4.10.

It sure was a snowy start to our day!

Language Arts: Today was a busy one in room 24. Since we did not have any specials today, we were able to get through a lot of different things. In spelling, we started by taking our spelling pretest. The words for the week have the V/V spelling pattern. Be sure to study these words a little each night since several of them can be tricky. Also, be sure to study the 5 highlighted words on your list. You we will be asked to know their definitions and to write them in a good sentence that use context clues.

In reading, we listened to our next story in our basal. Since we will not have a weekly homework packet this week, we divided up into table groups to work on the comprehension questions at the end of the story together. I think this helped each student see the details that need to be included in each answer in order to be specific and relate their answer to the story.

In grammar, we practiced writing verbs in their present, past and future tense. This is the grammar skill that will be tested on Friday as well as the comprehension skill of fact and opinion. We will continue reviewing these skills throughout the week.

We also found some time to meet with our third grade reading buddies, listen to our read a loud, and practice our word master words.

Homework:
***No Weekly Homework Packet this week.(This is a reward for the students winning the food drive.)
***Study your spelling words, definitions and Word Master words. Our W.M. test will be either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
***Flip Through a Book project-Due January 7th. Please do not wait until winter break to get started on it. I expect 9 weeks worth of effort on this project.

*************************************************************************************
Math:
Today in math we completed our minute, reviewed problems on white boards and jumped in to Order of Operations, Number Sentences, and Solving Equations with Variables. These are not new concepts and we simply reviewed each one. We did, however, take the time to review the vocabulary that corresponds to each skill as well.

Homework:
***Math Boxes and Study Links 6.7 and 6.8

************************************************************************************
Social Studies:
The entire 40 minutes of our content time was spent today getting ready for our chapter 3 test tomorrow. We filled out a chart differentiating between the differences between the Makahs, Taos, Iowas, and the Senecas. This is a great study guide to review for the test. We also spent some time playing a game reviewing the important concepts of chapter 3.

Homework:
***Study for the chapter 3 test(It is tomorrow.)
