Language Arts: Today in Language Arts, we reviewed types of sentences, created complex sentences, and worked on a writing prompt in preparation for ISTEP next week. Our theme is- "It takes 2!" -Two pages that is!
Homework: Fluency and flow is due on Friday. Our Spelling test will also be on Friday.
Math: We had a productive day in Math. We worked on using counters to find the whole of a set . Quite a bit of time was spent on reviewing computation skills.
Homework: Page 221 and Page 222
Social Studies: We discussed Lesson 2 today and had our quiz over lesson 1. We will review tomorrow and have our test over Chapter 1- Lessons 1 and 2 on Friday. (I would like to get this completed so that it is not hanging over.since we will have Social Studies only on Monday next week.)
Homework:Practice book pages 19 and 20.

Terrific Tuesday!

***ISTEP starts next Tuesday. Please make sure your child comes to school well rested. We are still in need of healthy snacks for ISTEP week. If you are interested in donating, please send in enough for our Language Arts class.

Language Arts: Today we reviewed our RIT vocabulary for the week and worked on complex sentences. The students also worked with partners reading their story for the week and picking out character traits.
Homework: Study Spelling and continue working on Fluency and Flow(due Friday).
Math: In Math today, we worked on comparing and ordering fractions. We spent quite a bit of time reviewing a variety of skills, from adding fractions to long division using our white boards. The students had a chance to play "teacher" and ask for help by assigning different kinds of problems for others to work on with their white boards. This was fun!
Homework: Math Boxes 7.9 and 7.10 (Our Unit 7 test will be on Friday.)
Social Studies: Today we reviewed Chapter 1- Lesson 1 again, learned about time lines, and started to discuss lesson 2. The students were given some time to work on their assigned practice book pages.
Homework: Study for the Chapter 1-Lesson 1 quiz tomorrow and practice book pages 17 and 18(if not completed).

We survived another Monday!
Language Arts: We took our Spelling pre-test and discussed the different ways to spell words that contain the long i sound. The independent Spelling Test will be on Friday. Please review these words each night. This is a tricky list!
In Reading, we read our story for the week, The Astronaut and the Onion.It is realistic fiction and contains the following vocabulary words: universe, protested, astronaut, endless, sensible, realistic, and paralyzed. Please review the meaning of these words as you read the story together at home. Our skill for the week is Making Inferences. Fluency and Flow is due on Friday.
In Grammar, we worked on complex sentences and reviewed conjunctions other than and, but and or. This will help us in our writing- Compound sentences(last weeks skill) and complex sentences help to build more detailed descriptions and more vivid sentences. This is a work in progress, but it is showing up in their writing.
In Writing, we completed a prompt that we worked on last week. Today the students had to come back and revise their sentences by making their simple sentences into compound and complex sentences.
Important Information: With ISTEP being next week, I am asking for parents who would be willing ,to send in a healthy snack for our Language Arts class. We have 24 students in our class-Thanks in advance! We need full bellies and alert students all week!

Math- In math today, we worked on changing a fraction to a decimal and comparing more than one fraction by placing them in decimal form and arranging them from smallest to largest. We are on track for our Unit 7 test on Friday, September 12.
Homework:Math boxes 7.7(Omit #2), and 7.8(all)
Social Studies: We started our new rotations today. My homeroom class now has Mrs. Woods for Health. Please visit her blog to check on daily activities and homework. I started Miss Grannan's class today. Today we started Chapter 1- Lesson 1. This lesson is pretty much a review from last year. The students do have a handout with all the important information from the lesson on it. We will review it again tomorrow and at the beginning of the class on Wednesday. The students will have a short quiz over lesson 1 only- on Wednesday.

It is Friday! Go ND!
Today in Language Arts, we completed our assessments for the week and practiced a writing prompt. Be looking for the assessments to come home on Monday. I only need the Student Evaluation Chart signed by a parent and returned.
Homework: Read 20-30 minutes per night and start working or thinking about the project for this nine weeks. The Cereal Box is due on October 10.
In Math, we did some in depth problems where the students had to show all their work as well as their answer. This is great practice for the ISTEP! We also worked on equivalent fractions, changing a fraction to a decimal and to a percent, and adding fractions.
Homework: None- We have a test tentatively scheduled for next Friday. I would like to get it in before the week of ISTEP while all the information is fresh in their heads.
In Social Studies, we wrapped our project and Chapter 1. New rotations begin on Monday, September 8. My homeroom students will have Mrs. Woods for Health next. Be sure to check out her link on my blog starting next week to find out what your child is working on in Health.

What a rainy day!
After a soggy start to our day, we were off and running...
In Language Arts, we continued our new Vocabulary Vine program. I can see it starting to work already as students are brainstorming new words from their word parts. Be sure to ask tonight what new word parts they learned today! We also continued with this weeks skill- simple and compound sentences. The students are getting better in picking them out. We also continued this in our writing for the day. We used string and determined by the length of a string if a sentence was simple or compound. The kids had a blast doing this! The kids were encouraged to use both types of sentences in their own writing to build their sentence fluency.
Homework: We will have our independent Spelling test tomorrow. Be sure to study! Fluency and Flow is also due tomorrow!
Math: After computation, we worked on finding equivalent fractions and changing simple fractions to decimals and percents. The students also worked on a quiz of the lessons discussed so far in Unit 7. Be looking for these to come home on Monday.
Homework: Pages 205 and 207
Social Studies: We worked hard on our project for this rotation. Tomorrow will be spent completing it. If the project is not completed tomorrow, it will be sent home for homework. Our new rotations start on Monday.
Homework: A parent signature is needed on their Social Studies test.

In Grammar, we reviewed again subjects and predicates and worked on our new concept of simple and compound sentences. We also started our new program called Vocabulary Vine.
Today we introduced the word part tele-. This program will help us build our vocabulary and boost our comprehension and word choice in writing!
In Writing, we worked as table groups to make a piece of writing better by adding in specific details, vivacious verbs and awesome adjectives! I was thrilled at how well the kids worked together as a group to develop their writing.
Homework:Fluency and Flow is due on Friday.Independent Spelling tests are on Friday as well. Also, it is not too early to read a book and start to work on the first book project. The cereal box project is due Oct. 10.

It is September already!
Language Arts: After a slow start to our morning,(I had many tired faces!) we started our day as if it were a Monday. We had our Spelling Pre-test and independent Spelling lists were handed out. This test will be on Friday even though it is a short week. We listened to our story for the week. You will be happy to know that it is a short story.:o) We reviewed complete subjects and complete predicates again even though this was a skill from last week. The new Grammar skill for today was simple sentences and compound sentences. This will be reviewed throughout the week as well.
This week we also started a new program that will be used for grades 3-5. It is called Vocabulary Vine. Each week we will study the root words, their origin, and the meaning of the word parts. This is an awesome way to learn new vocabulary. Be sure to ask your child what new words they are learning throughout the week!
Homework:In Language arts, many assessments from last were handed back. You should see a Grammar Test, a Spelling Test, A Selection Assessment, and a Weekly Assessment. The only thing that I need signed and returned is the Student Evaluation Chart. This lets me know that you looked over the Weekly Assessment. Also for the week, your child should be studying their Spelling list. The test will be on Friday. Fluency and Flow for this week is shortened. You need to sign that your child read to you and they must complete only 4 questions at the end of this weeks story.There is no additional activities for the week.
Math:After our minute and computation, we worked on the lesson for the day. It showed the students how to add fractions by using the face of a clock. This was a bit confusing at first so we will revisit the concept again tomorrow.
Homework:Page 203 and Math Box 7.5(Do not do #2 on the Math Box).
Social Studies:We played Jepordy today in Social Studies as a way to review for our test tomorrow over Chapter 1- Lessons 1-4. I was pleasantly surprised on how well the students were prepared and able to answer the questions.
Homework: Study and review the Chapter and notes for the test tomorrow.
