Today in Language Arts we switched for Vocabulary Vine, read and discussed chapter 13 of our novel study, handed in page 14 of our published book, and worked on a writing reflection piece for chapters 6-12. (Double Specials)

Language Arts:
The I Love to Read Challenge starts today! Start marking those calendars(purple). They will be due every Friday.
Today in Language Arts we were busy the entire morning. We started off with taking a Word Master vocabulary quiz. If your child received an "N", that paper will be coming home tomorrow for a parent signature. It is important that we know all the definitions, synonyms, and antonyms of these words so that we can start to compare this list of words to our last list in preparation for the upcoming test on or about Feb. 18.
We also took some time to work on our Page 14 published book writing piece which is due tomorrow. This seems to be the most personal piece so far. Many students are writing more the minimum of 3 paragraphs on this topic!
We also read and discussed chapters 11 and 12 in our novel study, worked on reference sources, and worked on handwriting.

I am glad to be back after being out yesterday due to a Math Meeting.
Language Arts:
We plugged along today in our novel study. Brian, the main character, is really starting to feel what it is like to survive on his own in the Canadian wilderness. We will continue learning all about his survival strategies next week as we read on.
We also spent quite some time looking over sample ISTEP writing prompts. We took the time to discuss what qualities some of the samples had that made them better than others and how we could improve each one. More time next week will be devoted to writing.
Monday starts the I Love to Read Challenge. Calendars will be passed out and we will be on our way! Please make sure that your child comes to school each day with their independent reading book. Every spare second will be spent reading. We have a goal to meet and it takes every one participating to get the job done!

Mark your calendars.... Science Expo Projects are due next week!(Monday, Feb. 1)
Language Arts:
We had extra time today in Language Arts since it was another day without a special due to Kindergarten's MAP testing. I am not sure how the students feel, but I enjoy having some extra time to get more accomplished.
After Vocabulary Vine, the students and I went over the vocabulary and the questions from Chapter 7, and read and discussed Chapter 8. Next, we took a short quiz over the first two pages of our Word Master words and worked on our next page in our published books. I am impressed with how well everyone is keeping up with the daily writing. This extra practice will help all of us as we prepare for the writing portion of the ISTEP. Speaking of the ISTEP, we also took some extra time to discuss what needs to be completed in a writing prompt. We even practiced with an old prompt from last year. Our goal is at least two pages of writing. We can do it! On Friday we will look at samples that are exemplary and ones that we will work together to make better.

Today went very smoothly. We continued with computation, problem solving, and solving proportions. Setting up the proportions is getting easier and easier everyday.

Social Studies:
Today we reviewed the settlement of Roanoke and started to discuss Jamestown. We took the time to fill our our Interactive Student Workbook together as we discussed the emotions that the settlers felt in each settlement. Tomorrow we will continue discussing the last settlement, Plymouth. The students will then be placed into their cooperative groups to "act out" their scene.

What a cold Monday!
Language Arts:
Today was a long day in Language Arts without any specials. We were able to get quite a bit of work completed, though. Word Masters were passed out and the students were asked to know the first 8 words by Wednesday. We also read and discussed Chapter 6 of our novel study, worked on our published book writing which is due for tomorrow, and listened to our read aloud.
We also had the pleasure of having a Chinese student and their host student visit our class today. They shared many interesting facts about their culture, schooling, and way of life. The students were very attentive and interested in all that they had to share.

This is becoming an easier concept to understand as we do more and more practice setting up the problems together with rate tables and proportions.

Today in Social Studies we discussed what it would be like to go to a different school in another country. We talked about the challenges and difficulties that we would face each day. I am glad to be back in the building today after being gone yesterday for a Math Committee Meeting
Language Arts: We started off today in Vocabulary Vine and then we jumped right into our novel study. The students had their pens and pencils out and they were ready to start marking up their books with examples of figurative language examples. We read and discussed chapter 4 together. They the students were given time to read and answer the questions for chapter 5. We will have an assessment tomorrow over this first section chapters 1-4.
