3/29/11

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts we reviewed our new story vocabulary, practiced our RIT vocabulary from this week and last, listened to our story on tape, switched for Vocabulary Vine, and worked diligently on our grammar skill for the week. Today we focused on the comparative and superlative form of adjectives. We completed a page in our grammar work book. In spelling, we sorted our words by their accented syllable.

Today in math we completed our minute, reviewed RIT vocabulary, worked on rates and pan balances, and worked on computation on white boards.

Social Studies(Doms)
Today we read and discussed the summary and the Reading Further section. We also completed a page together in our interactive workbooks and worked on designing a poster individually. This poster encourages others to conserve water in the Southwest region.

Language Arts:
Today during our Language Arts time we took our spelling pretest, illustrated our published books, and took our overall Unit 5 reading assessment.

Homework:
***Published book order forms were due today! I need an order form from every student. If you do not wish to purchase additional books, please check the "No" box and sign the order form. Don't forget shipping and handling.
*** Weekly-due Friday
***If your child will not be at school the entire week, please let me know so that I can make arrangements for our weekly assessments to be taken prior to break.

Math:
Today we completed a minute, worked on computation on white boards and completed lesson 10.4 which dealt with rates, tables, and graphs.

Social Studies:
Today we jumped into chapter 11 which dealt with how people use the Colorado River.
We will finish this short chapter this week and the test over chapter 11 will be on Friday for my homeroom. Study guides were passed out last week. If your child will not be at school for the test, they need to see me to make arrangements to take the test prior to break.

Just so you know... Report cards will not be sent home until after spring break due to a problem.

Language Arts:
Today we worked on our grammar skill, reviewed our RIT vocabulary, switched for Vocabulary Vine, met with our reading buddies, and completed our weekly RIT test. I was happy to see that the tests taken today were much better than last weeks.

Homework:
***Weekly due tomorrow- Please do not forget parent signatures at the top and for each night of reading minutes.
***Did you reread the weekly story with a parent? Do you know all the vocabulary words?

Today was our Odyssey time in the computer lab. We also spent time working on complex order of operations problems, grading our homework, and math vocabulary.

Social Studies:(Doms)
Today we jumped right into Chapter 11. This is a quick chapter that discusses the water usage of the Colorado River. The plan is to shorten this chapter and test before spring break. Study guides and vocabulary were passed out today. Mrs. Doms' students will have their test next Thursday, March 31.

***Chapter 10 tests were passed back today. Please be looking for them in the blue take home folders.

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts we completed a minute, worked on our grammar skill for the week by working on white boards and completing a page in our workbook, switched for Vocabulary Vine, and spent a short bit of time working on our illustrations for our published books.

Today in math we stepped it up a bit! After completing our minute and working on computation, we jumped into working with double pan balances. (This can be a bit tricky!)

We had our Chapter 10 test today. After our tests were handed in, the students spent the remainder of the class period working on their article about The Alamo that they started during the last class.

3/21/11

I sure am glad to be back after missing my first two sick days of the year!

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts we had double specials, a code blue drill and a shelter in place drill. Right after that we jumped into our usual Monday routine. We took our spelling pretest, reviewed our new RIT vocabulary for the week, discussed our story vocabulary, and listened to our story on tape. This week our story is called Wild Horses. Please be sure to discuss the story and the vocabulary as you read it with your child.

In grammar, we focused on using the forms of good. We worked on white boards as practice then completed a page in our workbook.

We finished up the day with listening to a few pages in our read a loud.

Homework:
***Weekly- due Friday- Please remember that all questions need to be answered in complete sentences with details to support your answer. Those students who answer with fragments or one-word answers will need to redo their work.

Today was a busy but fun day in math. After completing our minute and working on computation on white boards, we jumped into Unit 10. The focus today was dealing with pan balances. This started out to be a bit tricky, but it didn't take long for the students to get the hang of it.

Language Arts:
Today we continued working with the comparative and superlative adjectives more and most. We also practiced using commas when using introductory words that are not part of the complete subject or predicate. Before Vocabulary Vine, we also worked on the illustrations of our published books. Finally, we spent some time digging through our basal finding character traits that described the two main characters of this weeks story. This was really fun for the kids!

Today we read and discussed the summary of chapter 10 and started on our letter about the Southwest. This letter has specific guidelines and the directions should be followed. The students will need to turn in their rough draft in pencil/cursive as well as their final copy either typed or in ink. This is due for Mrs. Doms class on Friday(3/18/11)

Language Arts:
Today was a productive morning. We worked on our grammar skill for the week which is using the comparative adjective more and the superlative adjective most. We also switched for Vocabulary Vine and most of the students started the illustration process of their published books.

Homework:
***Weekly due Friday
***RIT vocabulary Test on Thursday. This test will contain 20 definitions or examples. Ten of the words will be from our last two weeks of RIT words. The remaining 10 words will be a review of the words we've discussed daily. Please study your RIT vocabulary.
***Thursday is "Go Green" day. Bring in $1.00 if you would like to wear a special green item and donate to the zoo.

Today we finished our tour of the Southwest in the big rig. We visited such places as Guthrie, Oklahoma, Austin, Texas, and the Alamo. We finished up the day with a group activity.

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts time flew by! Right after double specials, we took our spelling pretest, sorted our spelling words by their endings, reviewed the new RIT and story vocabulary for the week, and listened to our basal story. The genre for the week is realistic fiction. We did not have time today to work on any new grammar skills.

Homework:
***Tomorrow is our day to visit the book fair. If your child wants to purchase anything from the book fair, tomorrow would be a great day.
***Weekly is due on Friday-Don't forget the parent signatures at the top of the packet and each night next to the nightly reading minutes. Thank you!

Today in math we discussed volume, capacity, liters and milliliters. We discussed how to make the conversions and practiced several problems together. We also worked on various skills as a review on white boards.

***Tomorrow we will review all of the Unit 9 skills and work on a practice test in groups. The test over this unit will be on Wednesday. Please make sure they review the practice test at home.

Today we completed presentations as a class and finished up reading the last three sections in our book. We stopped along the way at places like "The Alamo". We also started working on an activity in groups that we will finish on Wednesday.

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts we completed our minute, reviewed using the correct articles in sentences, practiced our RIT vocabulary, put the finishing touches on our poetry typing, and listened to the 5th graders perform their Circle the State songs.

Language Arts:
Today was a very productive one. We were able to review our spelling words and their definitions, work on our grammar skill for the week which is working with articles, discuss and complete a worksheet on making judgments, switched for Vocabulary Vine, and listened to a short chapter in our read a loud.

Homework:
***We will have a short RIT test on Thursday. We do go over these words everyday in class as a daily review. The students have these definitions in their red binders. Studying for this test should be easy since the words are reviewed daily.

Today in math we graded our worksheet on area that we completed last night as homework, worked on computation, and continued practicing finding the area of triangles and parallelograms. We ended the class by working on a Standard Assessment that covered different computation skills.

Today we continued our journey of the Southwest region in our big rig truck. We visited and learned about the Grand Canyon and visited places in El Paso, Texas and stopped along the border to complete a group activity. The students will present their activity when we meet again next week.

Another cloudy Monday...

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts it was business as usual. Since the monthof February is over, we have jumped into our basal once again and the students will resume their weekly homework packet.

Today we took our spelling pretest, reviewed the new RIT and story vocabulary, listened to the story on tape, reviewed what it means to make judgments, and practice finding articles in sentences.

Homework:
***Weekly homework packet- due Friday. Please do not forget signatures daily for reading minutes and at the top of the sheet to verify that the story was read at home
***Camp under- Friday. Bring in $1.00 to support the One for Books program.
***RIT Review test-Thursday
***All normal assessments will be given on Friday.
