Field Trip Friday!
We were gone all morning on our field trip to the South Bend Regional Art Museum. I am happy to say that my students were very well behaved and their sculptures turned out great! They will be displayed for Gallery Galaxy. We returned just in time for lunch and a short recess break. What a fun day!

Today in Social Studies were read and discussed the first two settlements-Roanoke and Jamestown. The students really have a few creative ideas about what happened to the people of Roanoke. What imaginations! We will continue with this chapter next week.

I am glad to be back at school today.
Language Arts:
Today was a short morning due to double specials. We were able to switch for Vocabulary Vine and take our weekly assessment a little early since we will be at our field trip all morning tomorrow.
Homework:
***Reading calendars are due tomorrow! They will we counted up and returned tomorrow so that we can turn them in one last time on Monday. Monday is the last official day to turn in reading minutes. We are doing a great job so far so let's really "pour it on" this weekend!

***An AR Checkup sheet was sent home today. Please sign and return it tomorrow.

Today in math we worked on Study Island, completed our minute, and worked on some sample problems in preparation for next week. We are ready! Please stress to your kids to take their time, keep an eye on the clock, and double check all of their computation. They need to show their work when asked too.

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts we switched for Vocabulary Vine, reviewed our vocabulary for the week, listened to our read a loud, practiced our spelling words for the week,and worked on our grammar skill of the week which is subject and object pronouns.
An ISTEP+ schedule was passed out to the students today. We are testing next Tuesday-Thursday. We are getting geared up and the students are ready! Please remember to help at home by sending them to school on time, well rested, and with a healthy breakfast. Oh yes- Don't forget the gum!

***I will be pulling AR reports later this week. Every student is expected to read and pass a total of 3 AR books this grading period. Please ask your child if they are taking tests.

Math: We started Unit 9 today. It deals with variables, formulas, and graphs. The lesson today dealt with finding the area of a rectangle by using the distributive property. This Unit looks like it will be fairly easy.

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts we started our new story for the week. Please take the time to review this weeks vocabulary. The words are as follows: arroyo, behavior, secluded, glimpse, stunned, nestled, unpleasant, and arousing.
In spelling, we took our pretest this morning. Please make sure that your child is practicing their spelling words a little each night. It is expected that every student should get at least 23/25 on their spelling test each week. If they did not get at least a passing grade on last weeks test, you will find their test with a sticker for a parent signature. Your child should write the correct spelling of the words that they missed 10 times each for tomorrow.
In grammar today we worked on subject and object pronouns. This can be a little tricky so please make sure that you go over the worksheets that we completed together in class. This will be the grammar skill that is tested on Thursday.
Reminders:

During computer lab, we took the time to continue typing our published book pages. We also spent the last part of our Language Arts time having a read-in. At this time, everyone was busy reading and logging minutes for their in school reading time.

***Read and record minutes-calendars are due on Friday. We need everyone to step it up and read, read,read!
***Word Master test tomorrow

Language Arts:
Today in Language Arts we switched for Vocabulary Vine, took our spelling pre test for the week and jumped into Unit 4 of our basal. This week we are reading Goin' Someplace Special. It is a story that is easy to read and the students can relate to the main character right from the beginning. We also reviewed the vocabulary that goes along with the story, picking out the homophones and finding synonyms as well. We also found only 5 minutes to start another chapter in our read a loud before heading off to double specials.

Today in math we completed our minute, worked on number stories that involved multiple steps and showing our work, and problem solving. Our lesson of the day involved the Golden Rectangle. The students used the idea of the Golden Rectangle and used it in writing ratio proportions as well. Tomorrow we will work on a practice test on huge sheets of butcher paper, working as a team, showing our work, and working as a group to solve the problems through explanation and a step-by-step- approach. This practice test, which will resemble the Unit 8 test which will be given on Thursday. The test will cover rates, ratios, and dividing decimals. Reviewing the practice test is an excellent way to review for the test.

I started by demonstrating how the matrix will work by reading about our first explorer, Christopher Columbus. As we read, we filled our matrix with pictures that showed the following: his personal background, who sponsored him, the dates of his exploration, the route he took, the motives behind his exploration, and the impact that his journey made. The students were then divided into teams and given their own explorer to read about and identify these key concepts about. Tomorrow the students will take turns presenting and teaching the other groups about their explorer so that they can fill in their matrices in their Independent Student Notebook.

***None-However, this is a chapter that contains a lot of information. It is helpful for the students to review the material a little each night.

We are back into the swing of things after our snow day yesterday!
Language Arts:
Language Arts was busy due to double specials today. We were able to switch for Vocabulary Vine, start a writing activity based on a picture book, and listen to our read a loud.
Homework:
***Read and record your minutes. Remember that reading calendars are due tomorrow. This is considered homework.
***Skill worksheets. Remember to do both sides of each.
***If you have not turned in your permission slip, please do so tomorrow.
Things to Know:
***Writing pieces were sent home today. Please make sure to look over them tonight. We stress writing at least two full pages with every prompt. They can do this!
***Book orders were sent home today. Be sure to look carefully through them. I also sent home a Tab order which contains higher lexile books, but the books might contain mature content. Be sure to verify your order.
