Language Arts: Today in Language Arts we reviewed our RIT words for the week, reviewed simple and compound sentences as well as conjunctions, and discussed our story vocabulary. We finished the morning off with completing a Venn Diagram as a class. This compared and contrasted a coniferous forest to a deciduous forests.

***Rough draft of "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" is due tomorrow- The final copy will be due on Tuesday of next week. This should be typed.

Math: We completed our minute which had a variety of skill practice. Our computation time was spent working on RIT vocabulary skills . We also worked today on standard notation, writing small and large numbers, comparing numbers, and number and word notation. We were able to get through quite a bit today.

***None- The students earned their 10th chip in the jar today for completed homework. They earned a free day on no-homework. Congratulations!

Social Studies: We had our Chapter 2 test today. We were also placed in groups to begin brainstorming ways to create our landform project. This project will be created in class over the course of the next 4 days. We will start new rotations next Friday. My homeroom students will then go to Mrs. Doms for Health.

Language Arts: We were busy this morning trying to make up for missing Monday. During reading, we discussed our new vocabulary for the week, listened to our story, and discussed the differences between coniferous and deciduous trees. During grammar time, we practiced identifying simple and compound sentences. In writing, we had time to work on our "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" rough draft. Finally, during our computer lab time we worked on skills in Study Island and took our Accelerated Reader test over this weeks story.

What a busy day!
With today being Tuesday already, we were extremely busy this morning!
Language Arts: This morning we took our spelling pretest, worked on sorting our words by spelling patterns, discussed synonyms for our spelling words, and discussed examples for the RIT words for the week. We also had a presentation by Mrs. Slater on bullying and double specials.
Our story for the week is a short one. It is a nonfiction article loaded with facts. Please be sure to discuss the story as you read it together.

It is Friday!
Language Arts: We took our assessments today and had some time to work on our "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" rough draft.
Math: We took our Unit 1 test today. We will pretest for Unit 2 next week. Be looking for the new RIT vocabulary next week.
Social Studies: We discussed the Sioux Indians today and how they used a Winter Count. We even created one of our own. We will share those in class on Wednesday.

Language Arts: This morning we completed our word sort and definitions during spelling. We also practiced simple/complete subjects, and simple and compound predicates. I feel that the students are ready for their test tomorrow. We finished our read aloud as well.
Homework:
***Book orders are due tomorrow. I plan on sending them in tomorrow afternoon.
***Weekly Homework Packet is due tomorrow. Don't forget your parent signature and initial on
nightly reading minutes.
***Assessments will be given tomorrow. Please look over vocabulary, RIT words, and your independent spelling list.
***Keep in mind that our first reading project is due on October 14th. Students should be reading and taking tests on a regular basis.

Math: Today in math, we spent 30 minutes in the lab working on 6th grade Study Island skills. In class we reviewed the upcoming test over graphs and finding the mean.

Social Studies: Today we discussed a picture of the Inuits in their surroundings. We then acted out what their roles were in the family as a means of survival. We had quite an interesting discussion as well. We read section 2.5 in our books and wrote a summary using the new vocabulary in our interactive workbooks. We ended the class with a discussion of the chapter vocabulary.

***Because of Tuesday's Presidential speech, we will need to postpone the test until Thursday of next week.
***Daily Geography is due tomorrow

What a great day to have recess duty!
Language Arts: This morning we reviewed simple and complete subjects as well as simple and compound predicates. After a little extra practice, the students were really getting the hang of locating them within a sentence. We also spent some time working on two different paragraphs with our editing partner. The students worked on finding a variety or errors in capitalization, quotations, apostrophes, commas, spelling, and even language usage. We also spent some time reviewing our RIT vocabulary for the week and listening to our read aloud.
In writing, we discussed cliches and our lesson involved the old cliche,"A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words." The students had the choice of a variety of colored pictures and were asked to write a creative story using imagery. From what I've read so far, I can't wait to read their finished products!

Our lesson for the day involved estimating and finding the exact percent of a circle by using the percent circle on our templates. We ended the class with a short quiz over different graphs. It looks as though they will be ready for our Unit 1 test on Friday. We will spend time tomorrow reviewing. I plan on pretesting for Unit 2 since it deals primarily with computation.
Reminder: our RIT words for this week are as follows: algebraic expression, absolute value, complementary angles, supplementary angles and corresponding angles.

The students practiced writing a short summary about what we read in their interactive workbooks and some students shared their summary with the class. This reviewed the vocabulary for the week as well. We also discussed the four different environments that the American Indians may have lived in and how they had to adapt to their new surroundings.
Homework:
***It is a good idea to review the vocabulary and the sections that we read in class each day.(They are very short.)
***Our test over Chapter 2 is projected to be next Wednesday.

Is it September already?
Language Arts: This morning in Language Arts, time flew by! We had our pictures taken, reviewed RIT words, listened to our read aloud, and discussed simple and complete predicates. We also practiced writing compound sentences. We accomplished this all before double specials!

Math: Today we worked on divisibility rules during computation time. (I think that many students forgot the rules over the summer so today's lesson should have been helpful. Our lesson for the day was percent and circle graphs. We are making a lot of progress on this unit. Our test over Unit 1 will be early next week.

We began with a discussion about moving to a new place and what makes us comfortable. This started our discussion about American Indians and their moving from Asia into North America. The students were also given a new list of chapter vocabulary. The words are as follows: origin story, migrate, environment, adapt, kiva, migration, natural resource, adaptation, and pictograph. Please review them a little each night.
***In looking ahead, it looks as though we will be finished with this chapter in about 6 school days. We will be having a test over chapter 2 probably next Wednesday.
