We survived Mini Mall!

We had a great day!

During Language Arts we listened to our last presentation and worked our way through centers. These centers included a word study activity, an independent reading activity, and a writing activity. During the writing activity, the students had a silent conversation with a partner. This practiced quotation marks, commas, indenting, and capitalization.

Math - We will start 5th grade math right after break. For the first week or two, we will spend time reviewing skills from the first journal that they may have missed. We will then start working in journal 2 when I feel that they are ready.

Mini Mall was great! The students had so much fun! I can't wait until the end of the year Mini Mall now!

Until tomorrow.... Unless the storm hits...

We had a great day! In Language Arts, we joined the other 2 classes and created 3-D snowflakes. They will look great hanging with our creative writing . Thank you to all the parents who helped out.
We also had computer lab, enjoyed a camp under and listened to a few Treasure Box presentations. We only have one more project to go! We have all enjoyed listening to them. (I have even heard several students encouraging others to read their project book!)

In Math we spent time working on computation, measuring angles, and learning a new algebra concept. The students also enjoyed a quick game that involving rounding mentally.

We did not have content today. We had Art Smart. Thank you to the parents who presented and helped out today. You are priceless!

Reminders:
***Our new content rotation will start on January 5th. I will start with my homeroom students.
***Science Expo proposals are due on January 7th.
***Please remind your students to bring home all their snow gear over the break. It sounds like "Mother Nature" may be getting a bit wicked very soon!

A Too Cold Tuesday!

It sure was cold outside today! Please make sure that your child remembers hats and gloves each day.

Today in Language Arts we reviewed digraphs, consonant clusters, vocabulary, and phonics rules during Triumphs, and listened to most of our presentations. We only have 4 more presentations to go! I am so pleased with the confidence of each speaker. They definitely are better prepared this time around.

In Math we are finally finished up with the CRT. (Almost everyone). We also worked in small groups with algebra concepts. The students were so excited to see that they can really work through some harder problems. We also had time to play a "I have... Who has..." game. This reviewed mental math dealing with division.

In Social Studies we ended our rotation with a review game of all of Chapter 2. It dealt with vocabulary, concepts, famous people, and skills. They students did an amazing job answering the questions. It was clear that they retained much of the information from Chapter 2. During the last few minutes of class, I gave them an overview of Chapter 3. They are excited that we will be discussing The American Revolution- a topic that they have heard of before. New rotations will start right after winter break. I will have my homeroom class at that time.

Things to Know:
***My Language Arts class will have a Camp Under tomorrow.
***Science Expo proposals are due on January 7th.
***Tomorrow my homeroom will have Art Smart.
***Mini Mall is Thursday. Please make sure that you have your money to shop!

Just one more week...It is hard to believe! One half our year will be over in just 5 more days! I know next week will fly by. We have a busy week planned!

Thank you so much to every one who donated items for our "Sponsor A Family." We collected a lot of gifts and I am certain that we will make several youngsters very happy. I am always so touched by the kind people here at Northpoint. We can really pull together to help a family in need.

***Complete handwriting pages 32 and 33 if not completed in class today.

In Math, we worked on our timed minute, reviewed computation on our white boards, and started our Unit 12 assessment over Rates. This assessment is taking them quite a bit of time so they will continue to work on it. Tomorrow they will begin their CRT (Cumulative Review Test). This is quite extensive and will cover all the 4th grade standards. This is a very useful tool for me in assessing each students strengths and weak areas before we begin the 5th grade journal after winter break.

Homework:

In Social Studies, we completed our Chapter 2 test and worked through our practice book and started the Chapter 2 review. We will work on these again on Thursday. Their project for this rotation was explained today. Starting tomorrow in class, the students will be creating a time line of 8 important events in their life. They will be asked the year that the event occurred, to write in detail about the event and to draw a picture to illustrate it. Class time will be given to complete this project.

Homework:
***Jot down the year of 8 important events or things in your personal life.(Parents: Your child may need your help with the year that these events happened. Some suggestions are as follows: your birth and facts, a family vacation, an award that they won, etc... They will then put the events in chronological order on their time line. Thanks for your help!)

***I can't wait to hang these up! They are always fun to read!

Until tomorrow...

Our classroom was very busy with students performing a variety of computation skills in order to figure out their rates and pricing. These will be displayed in our classroom next week.

It is McTeacher Night at McDonalds-I hope you can join us!

Today is McTeacher Night from 4:30-7:30. Many of us will be there. I hope that you can drop by for a meal and a friendly smile. Come and join the fun!

Today in Language Arts, we listened to our read aloud, reviewed past, present and future verbs, worked on centers that dealt with a word study activity, writing, and independent reading. I was able to meet with groups at this time and listen to each of the students read . I was impressed with the fluency and expression in their voices. Many of them were able to describe in detail events that were happening in their story as well. We finished up Language Arts by brainstorming ideas for our writing prompt and writing on our own.

Homework:
***Fluency and Flow- Due Friday
***If centers were not completed, they are due tomorrow

In Math we completed our minute, worked on computation skills as a review on white boards and continued our study of rates. We also had a quiz over finding rates. We will continue to work through this unit. Since it is a quick unit, I am aiming to test over this unit on Tuesday of next week.

It was a cold day today!

Please make sure that your child is equipped for outside recess. Many students returned to math complaining that their hands were freezing! Remember, we go outside unless the temperature is below degrees. My classroom is often a bit chilly ,too, so a sweatshirt to keep here at school is a great idea!

Today in Language Arts we added six word parts to our Vocabulary Vine, reviewed past, future, and present tense verbs, and started our new read aloud. This new read aloud has really caught their interest. I hope that it will inspire them to read other books by the same author.

Homework:
***It is a new month. Please read and record minutes on the December calendar in the planner.
***Reading projects are due next week!
***Fluency and Flow and assessments will be on Friday as usual.

In Math we continued our work on finding rates. If you have any grocery ads that include rates, I would appreciate it if you send them in tomorrow.

Welcome Back to A Snowy December Day!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their time off with family and friends. Just think...only three more weeks until winter break!

Language Arts-We had a great start to a Monday. We took our spelling test which was pretty tricky. The list this week contains silent letters and some homophones. Some students were surprised at the list that they were on for the week. I think that it will encourage them to study a little each night. We were also able to read our story My Brother Martin. We had a great discussion using the new vocabulary words about segregation and the great work of Dr. King. While reading at home, it would also be a great discussion starter...

We had our Winter MAP testing today in Reading. The testing will continue during different days next week as well. Next week Math will be tested.

Homework:
***Fluency and Flow is due on Friday
***Study spelling
***Reading projects are due on Dec. 12
***Read and record minutes- Remember today starts a new month on the calendar in planners
***Handwriting-Pages 29,30,31

Math- We started our last unit in the 4th grade journal today. It deals with rates. This seemed to be pretty easy for everyone. We will complete this unit, review, and start the 5th grade journal right after break. I am proud of the progress that we are making.

Homework:
***Pages 328,329,331

Social Studies- Today we reviewed and worked on the Chapter 4 review and pages 33 and 34 of our practice book. Tomorrow is the last day of our rotation. We will have the test over Chapter 4.

Homework:
***Chapter 4 Review- Questions 1-5 and 14-18
***Practice Book pages 33 and 34
***Review the notes for the test

Reminders:
***Keep bringing in items for our "Adopt A Family". The final day to donate Dec. 12.

Until Tomorrow...
