When we arrived at school today, our class went straight to specials. We did not have Language Arts.

Today in Math we learned a folding method for figuring out what a fraction of a fraction is.
The students found that this was a very time consuming method but it is an alternative method that Everyday Mathematics teaches as an alternative. For test purposes, they can use whichever method they feel the most comfortable with.

Today in Social Studies we reviewed lesson 3 again and filled out our Study Guide for Friday's test. The students should review their Study Guides each night to review the material covered that day in class.

Marvelous Monday!
Without specials today, it was a long day. We were able to get a lot of things accomplished though.
Today in Language Arts, we took our pretest in Spelling, listened to our Time for Kids article on tape, reviewed the new vocabulary, worked with our Reading Buddies, discussed pronoun and verb agreement, shared our Portrait Poems from Friday, and started creating Sonnets.
Homework:

***Cursive packet-due Friday
***Fluency and Flow- This week only the questions are due. The Home-School Connection sheet will not be completed this week. Instead, each student has a review worksheet to turn in on Friday instead.

In Math today we worked on computation on white boards and worked on finding fractions of whole numbers by using word problems and fraction sticks. We also completed two short quizzes in order to review measuring angles and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

During Social Studies we completed a short quiz over Chapter 5 -Lesson 2 and discussed The Plymouth Colony(Lesson 3).

Today in Language Arts we reviewed for ISTEP, worked on a Portrait poem, shared our poetry from yesterday, and completed all our assessments. All the assessments were graded, recorded, and handed back today with the exception of the Weekly Assessment. It will be handed back on Monday.

Another busy day...
We are collecting Pennies For Peace. All of the pennies we collect will go towards building schools and buying supplies for needy children in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Please start looking in couch cushions-We need all the pennies we can find!
Today in Language Arts we reviewed comprehension for ISTEP prep, reviewed subject, object, and reflexive pronouns, and devoted about 15-20 minutes to finish up our Free Verse poems. Many students finished these yesterday so they spent that time independently reading.

Today was a busy day around here! The students were excited about viewing all the Science Fair projects in the gym and I heard many interesting conversations about different projects. It sounds like they all learned a lot about the scientific process. Congratulations to all our winners!
Language Arts:
We reviewed again our grammar skill for the week, practiced some ISTEP review, typed some of our poetry during computer lab, and worked on a great piece of writing that will be included in our published books.

Today in Language Arts we continued working on subject and object pronouns. We completed a worksheet together in class and reviewed a transparency from yesterday. This is the skill that will be tested on Friday. During our poetry time we shared our Quatrains and reviewed our vocabulary.

Wow! It is now February and six more weeks of winter! YUCK!
Today in Language Arts we started our new story. It is called The Blind Hunter. We will continue to practice the comprehension skill of Drawing Conclusions while reading this story. Please ask your child questions about the story and the characters as you read the story together. This will help with their comprehension. In Spelling, we will work on word families and the study of plural patterns. This is a difficult skill this week so be sure to study a little every night. In Grammar, we will study subject and object pronouns. Once again this is a new concept for 4th graders so we will work extra hard this week.

During our Content rotation, we stayed in our homeroom groups to share Science Fair projects. I was so amazed with all our volunteers and their detailed presentations. I think I learned a thing or two! The remaining students will present tomorrow.

***Our Science Expo is on Wednesday of this week from 3:00-5:00. Please make arrangements to come to the Expo between those hours. You will need to pick up projects and take them home at that time.
