Welcome to Our First Monday!

Language Arts: After all of our storm drills this morning ,we took a spelling pre-test and each student was given a specific list of spelling words based on how well they performed on the pre-test. We also listened to and discussed our first reading story and our weekly homework was passed out. Our story for the week is called Miss Alaineus. The story vocabulary for the week is as follows: categories, slumped, credit, gigantic, capable, strands, soggy, and luminous. These words should be reviewed each night as they could be tested on at the end of the week in the Selection Assessment.

We also discussed 5 RIT vocabulary words. Each week more words will be added to this list. Knowing and identifying these words will help the students be successful on future testing. The words for the week are as follow: ballad, onomatopoeia, tone, anecdote, and colloquialism. The students have these definitions and examples in their RIT folders. These folders may come home each night to review.

Our Grammar skill for the week is sentence types. We will continue to work on identifying these types of sentences throughout the week.

Weekly Homework: A new type of homework has replaced the Fluency and Flow homework from last year. This year, the students will continue to read aloud to a parent and answer the questions at the end of the story in complete well-written sentences in cursive, but a few new parts were added. There is also a section that they complete with a detailed paragraph explaining the story, a list of their independent spelling words, and the RIT words for the week. There is also a section on the bottom of page one where I would like their nightly independent reading minutes to be logged. It is an expectation that each 5th grade student will read a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Please review this each night and I ask for a parent signature at the end of the week to ensure that all sections are completed. Remember this is due on Fridays at 8:05. (More details will be given about this at our Parent Information Night on Thursday, August 27.)

Homework:
***Students were given their individual lexile range today. They should be reading independently starting tonight and logging their minutes on their Weekly Homework Packet.

Math-Today in Math we completed our minute, worked on computation, reviewed line plots, and discussed median and mean. I also passed out a Math RIT vocabulary sheet. I will be giving the students 5-8 new words each week. They are expected to study these words and continue adding them to their RIT folder. Mini lessons and activities will be taught to learn and review this new vocabulary.

Homework: Math Box 1.3 and Study Link 1.2 and 1.3

Social Studies- Today in Social Studies we reviewed all of our vocabulary, discussed the oceans, continents, and practiced finding specific locations by using latitude and longitude. We also talked about the difference between an absolute location and a relative location. Wow! What a busy afternoon! The students really seem to enjoy our new Social Studies curriculum with their interactive workbook. It gives them an opportunity to work with a partner and move around the room.

Homework:
***It is a good idea to review the new vocabulary each night as well as the maps in their workbook.
***It looks as though our test over Chapter 1 will be early next week. More information to come.

Reminders:
***Our Parent Information Night is Thursday at 5:30. I look forward to seeing all of you then!

Until tomorrow...
