Hooray! We are finally done with ISTEP+
Language Arts: We spent the entire day in Language Arts groups today. We had one Science test before specials, one during our regular Math time, and one right after lunch. I am so proud of how hard the students worked this week. I know that it was an exhausting week for them and I am proud of the fact that they put forth their personal best. We are done with ISTEP+ for another year!
We also found a short amount of time to work on our novel study. We summarized chapters 3 and 4, completed a graphic organizer, and added some vocabulary and literary examples to our chart. (Please remind your child to keep up with these each night. Class time is given each day to work on them.) We will have a quiz tomorrow over chapters 1-4 as well as time for starting our Tic-Tac-Toe. Next Monday we will read and discuss chapters 5-7.
Homework:
***None- You may look over your graphic organizers or reread chapters 1-4.
***Read and record minutes in your planner. We need to continue to read and log our minutes until school is over.

It is Round 2-ISTEP+ !
Language Arts: Today was a packed morning in Language Arts. We stayed in these groups until lunch time. We completed three ISTEP+ tests all covering math skills. The students were much more confident this time around with the test being multiple choice. Tomorrow we will have just one test covering English/Language Arts.
We did find time, however, to start our novel study as well. It is The Sign of the Beaver. The students were excited to dive into the first two chapters together. We took the time to highlight literary examples right in our books. We found such things as similes, metaphors, flashbacks, tone, suspense and examples of colloquialism. We also discussed the expectations during the novel study. (The students are expected to have their novel study packet and book with them everyday at school. Homework will be assigned each night but time will be given in class to complete it. ) It is imperative that they keep up with each nightly assignment. The Tic-Tack-Toe and other assignments will be due on May 15th with quizzes given throughout the novel.
Homework:
***Due to ISTEP+, we will not have reading homework this week.

Math: We did not have Math today due to ISTEP+. I will see my students tomorrow!

With this rotation being a short one and starting during ISTEP week, we will not have any quizzes over the lessons to study for. Any quizzes will be open book. Be sure to study and review your notes each night to keep up. It is going to be over before you know it!
Homework:

We are back into the swing of things!
My apologizes for not blogging yesterday. We had an Internet problem here at school yesterday, but we are up and running today.
Language Arts: Today was a very busy morning. Since we did not have computer lab because of MAP testing, we were able to get quite a lot accomplished. We passed out our new read aloud books and I began reading aloud. (The students really seemed to enjoy the story so far!) We practiced our grammar skill for the week on an overhead, played a game of "Sparkle" to practice the spelling/phonics skill for the week, read some independently, and worked with writing buddies before completing our final draft of our writing piece. We ended the morning playing a very intense game of "Slap It." During this game we practice both reading and language terms, figurative language vocabulary, as well as parts of speech and punctuation.
Homework:
***Read and record minutes in planners.
***Fluency and Flow parent signature for reading the story and comprehension questions- due Friday.
***Wax Museum- Biographies are due on May 15th. Please refer to the orange handout for specific instructions and rubric.

Welcome Back!
Although we had a few tired kids this morning, it was great getting back into the routine of school!
LA: Today in Language Arts we took our spelling pre-test. The skill for the week is different spellings of the /er/ sound. A few words are tricky so be sure to practice a little each night. We also read our new story together, discussed new vocabulary, and reviewed special comparative and superlative adjectives where they use the words more or most before them. We also had 1hour and 15 minutes for MAP Math testing.
Homework:
***Read/record minutes in planners on the calendar
***Fluency and Flow- Read to a parent and comprehension questions only- due Friday
***Biographies- due May 15th
*************************************************************************************
Math: We reviewed a variety of skills on white boards and discussed today's lesson which dealt with algebraic expressions.
Homework:
***Pages 351-353 and MB 10.3
*************************************************************************************
Content: Welcome Miss Grannan's class! We started Chapter 6- Lesson 1. We got through the entire lesson and notes were passed out. We will review it again tomorrow. The students will have a short quiz over Lesson 1 only on Wednesday. Please study the notes.

This morning flew by!
This morning we had a chance to take our spelling bubble test, the selection assessment, and the the grammar test for the week. After that, we headed to specials.
Please check blue folders tonight. There is a colored schedule of all the up-coming testing. My Language Arts class actually takes the MAP Math test the Monday we get back to school after break.
Tomorrow is another early dismissal- We will take our weekly assessment and then have some fun creating human banana splits!
Have a fun and safe Spring Break!
Until Monday, April 13th....

A Start of Another Month...
Today was a busy day in Language Arts. We reviewed comparative and superlative adjectives, discussed what it means to skim and scan for information, and practiced finding facts and opinions in text. We also had time to work on Study Island in computer lab and start a 15 sentence portrait paragraph. So far these paragraphs are amazing! I can't wait until they are completed.
Be looking for the yellow copied papers describing our I Love to Read celebration on Friday. Please send in your toppings for our human banana split. It is going to be so much fun!
Homework:
***Monday, April 13th will be MAP (MATH) testing for everyone in my Language Arts class. Be sure to get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast that morning.
***Read and record minutes in the planner
***Spelling test-Friday
************************************************************************************
In Math we worked on converting Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius as well as working on double pan balance problems. (This is a fun way to practice algebra equations!)
Homework:
***None- I will see you all again on Monday, April 13th. Have a great Spring Break!
***********************************************************************************
We did not have content today. Instead we gave our students their reward for the Pennies for Peace donations. I will start content rotations will Miss Grannan's 5th graders on April 13th-our first day back after break.
Reminders:
***Tomorrow and Friday are early dismissals.
