It is Friday and a three day weekend!

Language Arts: In Language Arts, we read independently, wrote our introductions to our writing prompt, and completed our assessments. The students felt much more comfortable taking these assessments this week. I think they are already into the routine!

Homework:No homework. Remember though, it is never to early to read, complete a book, and start our nine week cereal box project. It is due on Oct. 10.

Math: During Math today, the students rotated through an assessment, working individual with me, and playing games that focused on both subtraction and multiplication. For the first time rotating, this went very well.

Homework: No homework.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, we reviewed for our Chapter 1 test which will be on Sept. 3. The students also completed 2 pages in their practice books where they reviewed the terminology from the chapter and had to describe the differences between the different Native American groups.

Homework:No written homework -but studying for the test by reviewing our notes is a great idea!

Have a GREAT weekend!

Until Tuesday...

What a day!

Language Arts: Today was a short day for us in Language Arts since we had double specials. We did manage to review subjects and predicates in preparation for our test tomorrow, silent read, and work on our 15 day crunch in writing. I was impressed with the students as we worked through Word Choice and ways to make our writing sound more impressive. They have quite an extensive vocabulary!

Homework: Our assessments for the week will be tomorrow. Please review Spelling independent lists. Fluency and Flow is due tomorrow as well.

Math: After our minute and computation, we started lesson 7.4 which discusses adding and subtracting fractions. I intend to spend some time on this skill since it is a vital skill in preparing for the lessons that follow. The students were given a board quiz today with multiplying a two digit number by a two digit number. Look for these quizzes to come home soon.

Homework: Math Box 7.4

S0cial Studies: We reviewed chapter 1- Lessons 1-3 today and then introduced lesson 4. This is the end of our Chapter. Tomorrow we will review all the material in preparation for our Chapter 1 test which will be next Wednesday, September 3.

Homework: There is no written homework unless your child wants to study their notes in preparation for the test next week.

Reminders: Please be sure that your child is packing a healthy snack. If you have questions, please refer to the healthy food guidelines on the PHM website.

Until tomorrow...

Wonderful Wednesday!

We had a great day today at Northpoint! The students came in all smiling and ready to start their day. (This could have something to do with picture day...:o)

Language Arts: We had a short class today due to the picture taking schedule. We did have time to do a fluency rotation where the students had a chance to read a passage from this weeks story and practice reading fluently aloud. We also listened to our read aloud and worked on this weeks Grammar skills- subjects and predicates.

Homework: Study Spelling and work on Fluency and Flow. Remember to chart your reading minutes every night in the planner. Each 4th grade student should be reading 20-30 minutes each night.

Math: We also had a shorter math class today as usual. We did a lot of computation and reviewed skills that we have been working on for the past two weeks. I am happy to say that they are getting more and more confident every day! We will continue practicing fractions of a whole set.

Homework: Math Box 7.3

Social Studies: We had an extra long homeroom block today due to pictures being taken. In our Social Studies block, we reviewed Chapter 1- Lessons 1 and 2 and lesson 3 was introduced. The students did not get their handout for this lesson due to the fact that our copier was down today. I will have them tomorrow to give out to the students... Hopefully! We finished the block with a vocabulary quiz over lesson 1. These are graded and will be returned tomorrow.

Homework:If your child did not get pages 18 and 19 in their practice book completed in class, it is homework.

During our extra time that was available, we worked on writing a book. The students actually were given only pictures to look at for a few minutes and they wrote the story. These are amazing! We are finishing them up this week and sharing them in class. When they are finished, look for them to come home. They are definately worth reading.

It was a hot one here today!

We are having some issues with our air conditioning and it was quite warm in school today. Please send a water bottle with your child and dress appropriately:o)

Reading:
We went over Fluency and Flow directions today so that everyone knows what is expected of them on Friday. We spent some time going over this weeks RIT vocabulary as well as a new DEAR activity that we will do for 1/2 hour Tuesday through Friday of each week. During this time, some students will be reading independently while others are working in a small group getting help in specific reading skills. It is important that your child have an independent reading book at school each day. We want them to be able to utilize every minute of their time!

Grammar:
We reviewed the 4 types of sentences. Please be sure to ask them what the different kinds are and what kind of punctuation they use.

Writing:
Today we worked on prompt attack in writing. We talked about how to set up a web in order to write and answer questions to a given prompt. This is slow process but great preparation for ISTEP!

Homework:Remember that every 4th grader needs to read 20-30 minutes each night. Their minutes should be logged in their planners and signed by a parent. Fluency and Flow is due on Friday. Our Spelling test is Friday too!

Welcome to our first full week!

We had a great start today. It was our first day of curriculum;o)

In Spelling, we took our Spelling pretest. Your child has an independent Spelling list that they should practice each night this week. The posttest will be on Friday. The skill this week is short vowel sounds.

In Reading, they were also given their homework for the week. It is called Fluency and Flow. It is due on Friday as well. This homework will need your help as well as your signature. I did explain this to the students, but if you have any questions, please write me a note in their planners prior to Friday so that I can explain the directions to you. Please encourage your child to write their answers to the comprehension questions in complete sentences and in their personal best handwriting.

In Grammar, we discussed sentences, fragments and types of sentences. We completed a sheet in class. This will be tested on Friday as well.

In Writing, we completed a baseline writing prompt. This will be used in our 15 Day Crunch in preparing for the writing portion of the ISTEP. The prompt dealt with writing a letter to their "Special Person". I have learned a lot of interesting things about a lot of people!

Math started off with our first Daily. The students were given one minute to complete ten different kinds of problems. We will start each class with this to work on both speed and accuracy. The rest of the class was spent reviewing a variety of skills. I will spend the next few weeks reviewing skills and I will use their beginning of the year test to ensure that we cover all the areas in need. So far, I am very impressed! This is a very motivated group! Homework tonight is a review sheet. It is due tomorrow.

In Social Studies, we started off with basic facts about Indiana. The students were given a white handout sheet that we discussed. I told them to study it. A quick quiz will be given over it on Wednesday.

Reminders: Our Parent Information Night is on Wednesday from 5:00-6:00. I look forward to sharing a lot of important information with all of you at that time.

We had our first day of switching classes today and the students moved from teacher to teacher without any trouble. I am looking forward to starting our actual curriculum next week. The kids seem anxious too!
